Perinatal- Prenatal and postnatal

Perinatal refers to the period shortly before and after birth, typically defined as the weeks before and after the baby is born. This includes the time during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

During the perinatal period, it’s important to remember that physical therapy is not just about rehabilitating injuries or managing pain; it’s about supporting you through the ongoing changes that come with pregnancy and the postpartum period, helping you maintain optimal function and mobility.

Our perinatal pelvic physical therapy program is tailored explicitly to perinatal care. It provides you with the tools and support you need to stay active and confidently address the physical challenges of pregnancy. Our expert therapists will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs, helping you navigate the physical changes of pregnancy and prepare for the postpartum period.

PRENATAL

As you progress through the first trimester, it’s crucial to focus on developing a safe and healthy exercise routine, and this is where physical therapy can be incredibly beneficial. A physical therapist can help you design an exercise routine that is safe for pregnancy and can address any chronic injuries that may arise during this time. They can also provide guidance on proper body mechanics and posture to help prevent common pregnancy-related issues.

Moving into the second trimester, physical therapy can help address and manage any pelvic girdle dysfunctions that may arise. Physical therapists can provide specific exercises and techniques to help strengthen the pelvic floor and improve overall pelvic stability. They can also offer hands-on treatments, such as manual therapy, to help alleviate any discomfort.

In the third trimester, physical therapy becomes essential in managing pelvic girdle symptoms and preparing for childbirth. Physical therapists can teach you techniques to improve mobility, reduce pain, and guide labor and delivery positions. Additionally, they can educate you about the immediate postpartum period and provide exercises to aid recovery, making the transition into motherhood as smooth as possible.

POSTNATAL

When you attend your first postnatal physical therapy visit, you can expect a comprehensive orthopedic evaluation focusing on the lower back, hip, and pelvis. This evaluation will help assess your physical condition and identify areas needing attention. Your physical therapist will also conduct a range of motion and strength assessment and may discuss the possibility of an internal evaluation of the pelvic floor muscles. However, this is not always performed at the first visit.

Our team will work closely with you during your visit to create a personalized plan that suits your needs and comfort. Our primary aim is to address any pelvic floor concerns and provide support for your postnatal recovery journey. Our physical therapy program is carefully crafted to support long-term postnatal recovery, considering each individual’s unique needs. Your well-being is our utmost concern during these visits.

We understand the unique challenges that new mothers face and have developed a comprehensive program to support your postpartum recovery.

Our postnatal care program is designed to address various physical concerns that commonly arise after childbirth.
