Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to conditions affecting the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues supporting the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. These conditions can present themselves in various ways, including dyspareunia (pain during sex), endometriosis, hip pain, interstitial cystitis, pelvic organ prolapse, pre and post-surgical abdominal care, pre and postnatal dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and bladder pain. While anyone can experience these conditions, they are more commonly associated with women, especially those who have given birth.
What Causes Pelvic Pain?
It is integral to understand that pelvic floor dysfunction can be caused by different factors such as aging, illness, genitourinary infections, gastrointestinal disorders, surgery, or musculoskeletal conditions like chronic back or hip pain. A variety of factors, such as endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, irritable bowel syndrome, urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, and pelvic floor dysfunction, can cause pelvic pain. It is essential to seek medical attention if you experience any unexplained or chronic pelvic pain. Therefore, seeking professional help is always advisable if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned.
Pain Management & Treatment
At our clinic, we understand how debilitating chronic pain can be, so we offer a comprehensive approach to managing pain and restoring mobility. Our team of skilled therapists is dedicated to helping patients alleviate their pain and regain their independence.
One of the techniques we use is manual therapy, a hands-on approach that can effectively alleviate pain and improve functionality. Our therapists are trained to use various manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and myofascial release, to address pain and restricted movement.
In addition to manual therapy, we also offer pelvic floor muscle training, a form of exercise that can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. This can be especially helpful for women who have given birth or who are experiencing bladder control issues or sexual dysfunction. Our therapists can customize a pelvic floor muscle training program to meet each patient’s needs.
Our goal is to give our patients contact the tools they need to manage their pain and improve their quality of life. If you’re looking for a comprehensive approach to pain management and mobility restoration, we’re here to help.
Patient Pelvic Health Education
Patient education is an essential part of the treatment approach, and patients are empowered with knowledge and understanding of their condition, along with the tools and resources needed to take control of their health. The aim is to help patients achieve optimal health and well-being by providing personalized care and support.
The team of professionals at Cray Physical Therapy has extensive experience in treating pelvic floor disorders and understands the challenges of these conditions. They are committed to providing comprehensive care and work closely with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient care.

What Should I Expect?
A pelvic examination and evaluation are not unlike any other orthopedic physical therapy evaluation. Your appointment will include a detailed discussion of your symptoms, followed by an examination to assess posture, range of motion, strength, and movement. The difference between a typical orthopedic examination and a pelvic examination is the potential addition of an internal muscle and soft tissue assessment. Assessment and treatment often include both external and internal techniques. However, we always cater to your needs and comfort level. Together, you and your therapist will work to construct a suitable plan, and we will address both the physical and emotional components of your pelvic dysfunction.

What are our patients saying?
Within ten minutes of my first session, I felt I could breathe. Hearing that my issues could be corrected with physical therapy immediately left me feeling less alone. Cyndi, too, is a mother; she’s been through this journey and makes you feel like you have a teammate helping you every step. If you’re asking me, pelvic floor therapy with Cyndi should be a part of every woman’s postpartum journey.” ~ Ashlee
